Family Background

Sukanya is a charming eight year old girl from Bangalore. The child’s father works as a manual laborer and is addicted to alcohol. All his earnings are spent consuming alcohol and he just does not care about the family. The children go through mental and emotional torture due to the adverse effects of alcoholism. Sukanya’s mother also works as a daily wages worker and is the only person who takes care of the family. Sukanya has a younger brother and a younger sister.

Conversation:

An NGO named Need Base India visited the area where Sukanya stays. The staff observed the child and her siblings roaming on the street as well as spending long periods of time on the railway platform. The staff then asked the children to shown them their house. The staff accompanied the children home and the staff waited for the mother to return from work. Then they had a conversation with mother, who shared that her husband is addicted to alcohol and he does not care about the children. He would drink copious amounts of alcohol and then quarrel with the children.  One day, Sukanya’s father consumed alcohol and quarreled with the family, finally he ran away from home. Then the children’s mother shifted home and worked as a house maid, staying with the family she worked for. The staff told the children’s mother to let the children be under the care of Need Base India and she willingly admitted her children to the organization.

In the home, Sukanya used to be a very silent girl. She was a little slow in learning and her activities. She was not mingling with the other children and used to sit alone. And the caretakers found out that she was not feeling too well, so they took her to a Health Camp in Malleshwaram, where the doctor said that she is weak and needs more nutrition. They gave her nutritious food and started counseling her regularly.

The home has a procedure of putting their new inmates through a Bridge program that covers educational, nutritional and behavioural rehabilitation.

The teachers also made her a leader in the activities done in the class. Then after she attended evening classes, she started improving in her studies. She is very good at painting.

Slowly, she started to be active and also mingled with other children. She now participates in all the activities of the home.

Sukanya is admitted to the 2nd standard, Government Girls School. She is the cleaning committee leader.

By helping support Sukanya’s overall well-being, you will be supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals 1 - 5.

The aim of FreeBasics when sponsoring a child are:

  • to ensure continued education,
  • clean residential environment
  • hygienic and nutritious food for a healthy growth,
  • timely medical attention with periodic preventive check-ups,
  • security of the child especially that of a girl child,
  • to ensure overall personality development of the child

Social Impact

Considering the School home not only houses the children, but takes care of their overall development and wellbeing, by having in-house caretakers and teachers to ensure they are properly looked after & guided after school hours to address their weaknesses, all this needs a considerable amount of financial inputs. Need Base India’s team provides transparency and shares the complete cost details with us, and our conclusion is that the homes are managed very well while keeping a strict vigil on the cost. The total spend per child is categorized basis the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 1 to 5 and presented to the child sponsor on a periodic basis.
