Family Background

Lavanya 7 yrs old from Bangalore. Lavany’s father was working as a manual laborer and he was addicted to alcohol. Unfortunately, he expired a year ago due to a health problem. The child’s mother is working as a manual laborer, in a market storeroom.  Lavanya has three elder sisters and one younger sister.

An NGO, Need Base India, visited the areas in search of children, who need support. They observed a child playing with her siblings and roaming on the street with much older people. The staff approached the children and they said that their mother had gone for work. The staff waited with the children, until the mother came back home, from work. They found out from the mother that the husband was addicted to alcohol and used to spend all his earning to drink. About a year ago, he passed away due to a health issue. After convincing the mother to let the children be under the care of the NGO, she finally agreed.

Need Base India was established with the aim of helping these vulnerable children and operates multiple residential homes for girls and boys within Government School premises in the city of Bangalore.

For instance, why the child is on the street, what are the interventions available to help the street children, why do children drop out from schools and what measures can be taken to prevent this.

NBI’s Vision, To stand for ‘Child Rights’ and guarantee that every child gets a ‘Happy Childhood’, thus enabling children to become responsible citizens

The home has a procedure of putting their new inmates through a Bridge program that covers educational, nutritional and behavioural rehabilitation.

Lavanya is admitted to the 2nd standard, Government Girls School..  She is a Discipline committee member.

Lavanya is very talented girl, she has good understanding abilities. She participates in all the activities very actively and she is good in studies; she is an obedient girl and takes care of the younger children in the home. She has good leadership. She is good in dance and won second prize in the dance competition done at the home.

Goal 5: Gender Equality

The aim of FreeBasics when sponsoring a child are:

  • to ensure continued education,
  • clean residential environment
  • hygienic and nutritious food for a healthy growth,
  • timely medical attention with periodic preventive check-ups,
  • security of the child especially that of a girl child,
  • to ensure overall personality development of the child

Social Impact

Considering the School home not only houses the children, but takes care of their overall development and wellbeing, by having in-house caretakers and teachers to ensure they are properly looked after & guided after school hours to address their weaknesses, all this needs a considerable amount of financial inputs. Need Base India’s team provides transparency and shares the complete cost details with us, and our conclusion is that the homes are managed very well while keeping a strict vigil on the cost.
