Family Background:

Jyotika parents and aunty stayed together in a home. The child's father and mother are daily wage labourers.  Jyothika has an elder sister.  The family was living a normal life, but one unfortunate day, the child's father had a heart attack and he died.

Subsequently, the family fell into deep debt, as the family was now fully dependent on the earnings of the children's mother.

Their mother took it as a challenge and continued working to care of her children. As the children grew up, the children’s aunty started to fight with the child's mother about petty issues and asked them to vacate the house. They were suddenly left to fend for themselves, on the street, with no roof over their heads.

There was no protection for the children. The children used to study at the Government School, under the care of Need Base India, an NGO. The mother decided to contact a hostel with the help of her sister's son-in-law.  The children stayed in the hostel for more than three years, but they were not provided with good food and most of their time went in the cleanliness and maintenance of the hostel.  Though the children complained about the problems at the hostel to their mother, the mother told them to stay there for a few more years. The children told their mother that they were not interested in staying at the hostel.

Finally, their mother decided to take her children back and she approached the Government School, to get a Transfer Certificate, when the Government School referred her to the home under the care of Need Base India.

Need Base India, an NGO, was established with the aim of helping these vulnerable children and operates multiple residential homes for girls and boys within Government School premises in the city of Bangalore.

NBI’s Vision, to stand for ‘Child Rights’ and guarantee that every child gets a ‘Happy Childhood’, thus enabling children to become responsible citizens.

Hence by considering the situation of the family, they admitted Jyothika in the home for further care and protection. She is studying in the 4th standard.

The aim of FreeBasics when sponsoring a child are:
- to ensure continued education,
- clean residential environment
- hygienic and nutritious food for a healthy growth,
- timely medical attention with periodic preventive check-ups,
- security of the child especially that of a girl child,
- to ensure overall personality development of the child

Social Impact

The school home not only houses the children, but takes care of their overall development and wellbeing, by having in-house caretakers and teachers to ensure they are properly looked after & guided after school hours to address their weaknesses, all this needs a considerable amount of financial inputs. Need Base India’s team provides transparency and shares the complete cost details with us, and our conclusion is that the homes are managed very well while keeping a strict vigil on the cost. This includes education, boarding, hygienic home, bridge development, medical attention, and last but not the least to take care of the children’s security. The total spend per child is categorized basis the UN's Sustainable Development Goals 1 to 5 and presented to the child sponsor on a periodic basis.
